The Place Command - what exactly is it?

I like to describe the place command as your dog’s OFF SWITCH - a designated spot that you tell your dog to get on and they are supposed to stay there until you release them. It's a spot where they practice doing nothing - strengthening their “calm muscle” as I like to say.

Think of it as your dog’s Place Practice. Like you would refer to your yoga practice, or anything else that needs some kind of commitment. It's no different for this command - but I promise, it’s totally worth it.

See the video below where I show you exactly how to get started.

In the video I mention how E Collar training can help you take your place practice to the NEXT level. Check out our E Collar Starter Guide for a detailed look into how you can use the E Collar to get the most out of this command. We share things like how to address whining or barking when your dog is on place and how long you should practice it daily. It's all laid out for you in our easy to use guide.

And if you're new to E Collar training and would like more information on how it can help you please see this article.

Who is this command for anyways? Any dog who has a hard time relaxing. And for all the owners who need a break from their dog being on all the time.

A note about age: if your dog is five months or younger, I recommend using the kennel instead of place. It's just as beneficial, but a little easier since you can close the kennel door. Without realizing it, daily kennel time for your dog helps them strengthen their calm "muscle" as I like to describe it. It strengthens their ability to relax, which will make it that much easier when you start your place practice.

When should you do it? Any time that you works for you. Maybe it's during your morning coffee or in the afternoon when you fold some laundry. Better yet, do it after some kind of exercise. A walk, fetch in the backyard or zoomies around the pool. Following up anything active with place is a GREAT combo to fulfill both your dog's physical and mental needs.

And now you know all about the most magical command there ever was! Don't waste your time on any other commands … the place command is the new party trick. Side effects may include a calmer dog and happier owner. Just sayin’.
